Someone just found a copy of one of my family’s Christmas cards from the 90s and, guys? I’m adorable! Lol! My sisters look just as impish and hyper as they were in real life, too. ?

Welcome to the next stop on The Woods trail of Zoraida Córdova’s Halloween Book Trail! I got to answer some fun questions about Halloween and desert islands and fear and all sorts of things. Check it out here and then continue on your journey through The Woods!
If your MC went trick or treating, what would they dress up as and why?
The last time Mariella went trick or treating it was in sixth grade. She and K.T. teamed up and they went as Antony (Mariella) and Cleopatra (K.T.). They made pretty much everyone treat them like royalty all week and everyone called them Tony and Cleo for the rest of the year.
Hudson didn’t go trick or treating much as a kid, but J.R. thought Halloween was amazing. The October before J.R. died, Hudson took him trick or treating for the first time. J.R. dressed up like Hulk—Hudson even painted the kid entirely green for the occasion—and he picked out Thor for Hudson. Since Hudson’s hair is so short, J.R. insisted on a wig. This insistence came in at the last minute so the only one Hudson could get was meant for young girls and was therefore too small for his head, too long, and had bangs. It looked ridiculous on him but it made J.R. happy and that was pretty much all that mattered anyway.
What scares the pants out of you?
Honestly, the intangible is more frightening to me than the tangible. And I’m not talking about ghosts. Spiders and heights and small, dark places are all less frightening to me than betrayal and abandonment. Those concepts and actions can do much longer lasting damage than a lot of other things worth being afraid of.
Do you legit believe in ghosts and things that bump in the night? (We won’t think you’re cray)
I’ve never seen anything, but yes! The universe is too vast and complex for there not to be things that we haven’t seen or can’t understand. What I don’t think is that any of it exists in the forms we have stories about. Vampires, werewolves, quasi-corporeal ghosts, etc. all may be based in something real, but most of that probably comes from the collective imaginations of humanity. Speaking of the human collective, the theory of universal consciousness is something I’m pretty much 100% sure is real.
If you were stranded on a deserted island or haunted house, what number are you to die and how?
Probably first. And it would be some stupid accident on my part or the fact that I exercise, like, never and am incapable of pulling myself up should I fall through broken floorboards or over a cliff or off a roof or something. Or, since I know nothing about shooting guns, I’ll misfire and hurt myself. Really, don’t trust me when things go to hell. I am not the person you want with you in a horror movie or zombie apocalypse or even on a deserted island.
What magical/supernatural creature do you secretly want to be?
I’ve never had an extremely strong desire to be a magical/supernatural/mythological creature (it seems like the cons really outweigh the pros most of the time; I would possibly make an exception for having the Gift out of Tamora Pierce’s Tortall world), but there are a few I would have loved to meet and/or have. Pegasus has always fascinated me as have fairies (the tiny, spritely ones, not the evil, manipulative ones). What I’ve really always wanted, though, is a dæmon out of The Golden Compass. I would jump on a chance to visit that world and meet my dæmon in a heartbeat!
I had a moment this morning where I realized that it is actually 2014. This shouldn’t have been a shock, but it was. Why?
BECAUSE MY DEBUT NOVEL RELEASES IN 2014! And I still haven’t really processed that truth.
So here it is, only three months away from my novel’s birthday, and I’ve been woefully neglectful of my website and the internet in general. I needed to unplug, though, and many things have shifted in my life the last few months. Good shift, but still. Headspace adjustments were needed. I switched day jobs for one, now teaching Literature in a very non-traditional setting, have been working on edits for Sing Sweet Nightingale, a fantasy project my agent and I love, and–most recently–book 2 in The Dream War Saga! The new day job doesn’t lock me in front of a computer for eight hours a day, so all of my internet obsessions ended up falling away one by one. But it’s New Years Day and I traditionally post my list of resolutions, so I’m going to keep that tradition.
First, a look at what I said I’d do in 2013:
1. I will finish two first drafts (of non-co-written books).
2. I will rewrite my book tentatively titled Pyrrhic Victory.
3. I will continue to work on getting myself out of the house to have some kind of social life.
4. I will not let more than two days pass without writing something, even if it’s only jotting down an idea that passes through my head.
5. I will attend at least three conferences/events this year.
6. I will keep trying to make myself work out.
7. I will keep up my blog schedule of posting three times a week on average.
8. I will start promoting Sing Sweet Nightingale — OMG YAY!
9. I will keep saving money to put toward moving out of Florida or taking my epic vacation. Or both.
10. I will take the next step toward becoming a full-time writer.
Overall, I think I made the wrong goals for how my year went. I can honestly say that I only succeeded at hitting the mark on numbers 5, 8, and 10. However, I did sign with a wonderful agent earlier this year (*waves at Danielle and Upstart Crow*) and have gotten involved with some wonderfully supportive writing groups like the OneFour Kid Lit team and a critique group with my agent-sister Tristina and the lovely Heather and Amber. In June I revealed the gorgeous cover for my novel in person at BEA. I got to visit my bestie Lani Woodland in November, and then celebrate the release of her awesome pirate fantasy Pieces of Jade in December. All-in-all, this has been a pretty fantastic year even if at the end of it it doesn’t look anything like I’d pictured it would.
So for next year?
1. Finish one new project for the agent-lady to fall in love with.
2. Attend at least four conferences/events.
3. Draft book 3 of The Dream War Saga.
4. Enlist someone with party-planning skills to help me host my launch party.
5. Figure out how to take good pictures of my necklaces so I can set up an Etsy store.
6. Read more.
7. Don’t let myself slack off on updating the website.
8. Figure out how to afford an RV so I can travel around the country.
9. Keep my fingers crossed that all the pies I have in the oven turn out well.
10. Take a vacation somewhere fun.
I don’t know what 2014 will bring, but whatever it is will probably be amazing. So, welcome, 2014! I’ve been looking forward to meeting you. Please play nice. 😉
I’ve already shared the glorious creepiness that is my friend Mary Gray’s debut novel The Dollhouse Asylum (I mean, COME ON! Just look at that cover!), but now I have more awesome things to share! Mary and our friends at Spencer Hill put together this creeptastic book trailer to go along with the beautifully haunting cover and cover copy.
A virus that had once been contained has returned, and soon no place will be left untouched by its destruction. But when seventeen-year-old Cheyenne wakes up in Elysian Fields–a subdivision cut off from the world and its monster-creating virus–she is thrilled to have a chance at survival.
At first, Elysian Fields, with its beautiful houses and manicured lawns, is perfect. Teo Richardson, the older man who stole Cheyenne’s heart, built it so they could be together. But when Teo tells Cheyenne there are tests that she and seven other couples must pass to be worthy of salvation, Cheyenne begins to question the perfection of his world.
The people they were before are gone. Cheyenne is now “Persephone,” and each couple has been re-named to reflect the most tragic romances ever told. Everyone is fighting to pass the test, to remain in Elysian Fields. Teo dresses them up, tells them when to move and how to act, and in order to pass the test, they must play along. If they play it right, then they’ll be safe. But if they play it wrong, they’ll die.
Along with the trailer (which you can watch here or in the player below), there’s also a CONTEST! For awesomely free things! Watch the video and then scroll down to enter. Also, don’t forget to add the book to your Goodreads list! It helps. No, really! It does! Because by adding the book on Goodreads, you can enter the contest. See? It helps!
Oh, and, by the way…

Before we begin anew, I want to say goodbye to 2012. Many amazing things happened this year.
I won my first writing award.
I sold my first novel.
I sold my first short story.
I attended BEA and spent ten fabulous days in NYC.
I traveled just because.
I made new friends!
All in all, I call that a very successful year, but did I meet my own goals?
Last year, I posted about New Years resolutions and how bad I am at keeping them (like many others, I think). I set ten goals for myself last year and this is how my list looks now:
1. I will redesign my blog with a custom template. (Done!)
2. I will finish book 2 of my current series. (Progress! Closing in on the halfway mark! :D)
3. I will polish and shop book 1 of my current series. (Begun June 2012 Sold to SHP July 2012!)
4. I will attend at least one conference. (Yay! BEA was amazing!)
5. I will post in this blog at least three times a week. (Good enough, I’d say! I was really close to doubling my count from last year)
6. I will develop the storylines for at least one additional series. (Two different series are in the works with Lani Woodland)
7. I will figure out how to make myself work out… somehow. (Yeah… this one is still an epic fail.)
8. I will develop some kind of a social life, even if it is a sporadic one. (The success of this one has been hit or miss, but I did get myself out of the house more often!)
9.I will budget better so I can either take my dream vacation or move to New York within three years. (Uhm… Yeah. Progress has definitely been made–I’m officially out of debt!–but this goal is still a LONG way off.)
10. I will not let more than two days pass without writing something, even if it’s only jotting down an idea that passes through my head. (The productivity of this year is kind of amazing, so I mark this one done!)

Overall, not too bad, right? Seven complete victories, two partial wins, and one epic fail. It’s a lot better than I’ve done in years past, I can tell you that. But now that I’ve made this much progress, where do I go from here? You always have to have goals or you’ll end up drifting and getting nothing done. So, my new goals for 2013:
Some of the goals are the same, but that’s okay. Aiming for productivity is never a bad thing and I really do need to figure out how to make myself work out. I’m really excited about some of the other goals and I know 2013 is going to be a FANTASTIC year!
